Leden in de spotlight: Frank van der Wiel (Architect)

Graag stel ik mij aan je voor…
Mijn naam is Frank van der Wiel, architect.

Na mijn studies MTS, HTS & TU in Delft en een dienstverband bij een architectenbureau, ben ik sinds 2011 werkzaam als zelfstandig architect. Na 5 jaar vanuit huis te hebben gewerkt, heb ik in mei 2016 de overstap gemaakt naar een van de meest inspirerende werkplekken van Oisterwijk: De KVL lederfabriek.

Van der Wiel architectuur richt zich met name op de particuliere markt. Ik vind het erg prettig om met woonvraagstukken bezig te zijn; zowel verbouw als nieuwbouw. Het mooie aan mijn vak is dat je een ontwerp maakt waar mensen voor lange tijd in gaan wonen. Zij brengen een groot gedeelte van de dag door in ruimtes die ik voor hen ontwerp. Wonen is heel persoonlijk. Samen met mijn opdrachtgever creëer ik een leefwereld waarin hij of zij zich thuis voelt. Zowel het wonen als het proces ernaartoe moet een beleving zijn. Ik neem de lastige taken op me zodat het zelf bouwen voor een opdrachtgever een mooie ervaring wordt. Het is dan ook van belang dat ik mij goed inleef in het dagelijks leven en de leefgewoontes van een opdrachtgever. Bij een kennismakingsgesprek kom ik dan ook graag bij de mensen thuis om al een beetje de woonsfeer te proeven. Naast woningen zijn er in mijn portfolio zeker ook bedrijfsgebouwen opgenomen. Die markt ga ik uiteraard niet uit de weg.

De laatste jaren ben ik betrokken geweest bij verschillende CPO-projecten. Bij collectief particulier opdrachtgeverschap (CPO) gaat het om een groep burgers die samen hun eigen woningen ontwikkelen. Onder de toestroom-leden zal het CPO-project op het Molenveldje in Moergestel wellicht bekend zijn. Daarbij heb ik als architect voor 15 starters 2 woonblokken mogen ontwerpen. Het bijzondere bij CPO is dat elke bewoner, aan de hand van zijn budget, zelf de grootte en indeling van zijn woning bepaalt. Collectief worden er keuzes gemaakt over project-overkoepelende zaken zoals de verschijningsvorm en materialisering van de woningen en de aannemer die de woningen mag bouwen. Ik ontwerp in een traditionele vormgeving met een modernistisch sausje.

Ik vind het belangrijk opdrachtgevers te verrassen met mijn ontwerpen. Heel vaak hebben mensen al een beeld van hoe hun woning er uit moet komen te zien. Dan is het altijd mooi om ze te laten zien dat het, vaak met eenvoudige middelen, ook op een andere manier kan.

Nieuwe initiatieven

In 2016 heb ik naast Van der Wiel architectuur 2 initiatieven ontplooid: IkWoon.In & GoetHuys

IkWoon initieert woningbouwprojecten waarbij de keuzevrijheid van de toekomstige bewoners centraal staat. Gelijk aan CPO. Maar daar waar bij een CPO-project vanaf het begin af aan veel risico’s en onzekerheden over kosten zijn, neemt IkWoon deze risico’s en onzekerheden over. Toekomstige bewoners behouden echter wel veel keuzevrijheid. Bij het IkWoon-concept worden, in tegenstelling tot CPO, de financiële gevolgen van keuzes direct inzichtelijk gemaakt.

GoetHuys heb ik samen met mijn compagnon Martijn van Linden opgericht. GoetHuys revitaliseert en transformeert bestaande kantoorpanden tot woningen voor senioren, alleenstaanden en mensen met een lichtverstandelijke beperking. Met name bij veel senioren speelt eenzaamheid een grote rol in hun leven. GoetHuys wil die eenzaamheid aanpakken door in elk GoetHuys een mogelijkheid te bieden om op een ongedwongen manier te ontmoeten,zowel met mensen uit het woongebouw als uit de omgeving. De locatie van een woongebouw is daarbij van zeer groot belang.

Waarom ben ik lid geworden van De Toestroom?

Ik ben lid geworden om op een informele manier lokale ondernemers te ontmoeten. Er worden leuke evenementen georganiseerd die enthousiast worden bezocht. Door regelmatig aanwezig te zijn bij deze evenementen, merk je dat je netwerk snel groeit.

Wat kom ik brengen en/of halen bij De Toestroom?

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Een architect haalt, in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld een websitebouwer of bloemverkoopster, over het algemeen niet direct opdrachten uit het lidmaatschap van een businessclub. Ik hoop altijd dat mijn naam blijft hangen bij leden en wordt genoemd als wordt gesproken over bouwen of verbouwen op bijvoorbeeld feestjes of andere aangelegenheden.

Ik sta ervoor open wat actiever mee te denken binnen de toestroom. Bij de laatste bijeenkomst werd de oproep gedaan om deel te nemen aan een commissie binnen de toestroom. Ik ben benieuwd naar de mogelijkheden en wellicht dat ik me daar in 2017 voor opgeef.
